🥀.. Abu Bakr al-Khallāl (234 – 311 H.) said: Al-Hasan ibn Ahmad al-Warraq informed me, saying: ‘Ali ibn Musa al-Haddad related to me—and he was truthful (saduq), and Ibn Hammad al-Muqri’ used to guide people to him—saying:

“I was with Ahmad ibn Hanbal and Muhammad ibn Qudamah al-Jawhari at a funeral procession. When the deceased was buried, a blind man sat down and began to recite [the Qur’an] next to the grave.

Ahmad said to him: ‘O fellow! Reciting at the grave is an innovation (bid’ah).’

When we left the cemetery, Muhammad ibn Qudamah said to Ahmad ibn Hanbal: ‘O Abu ‘Abdullah, what do you say about Mubashshir al-Halabi?’

Ahmad replied: ‘He is trustworthy (thiqah).’

Muhammad asked: ‘Did you write down anything from him?’

Ahmad replied:’Yes.’

Muhammad said: ‘Then Mubashshir informed me, on the authority of ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn al-‘Ala’ ibn al-Lajlaj, on the authority of his father, that he (the father) left a final instruction (awsa) that when he was buried, the opening and concluding verses of Surah al-Baqarah should be recited at his head, and he said: “I heard Ibn ‘Umar RA instructing that as well.”‘

Thereupon, Ahmad said to him: ‘Go back, and tell the man to recite.’
